In the Brierwood Women’s Golf Association match on July 1, the format was low gross, low net. In the first flight, Mona Dye had the low gross of 76 and Marje Roach had the low net of 64. In that first flight, Roach also had the fewest putts (27). In flight two, Sara Baynton had a low gross of 95 and the fewest putts (30). Mickey Salerno had a low net of 68. Janice Owens had low gross in the third flight at 101 and Florence Hopkins had the low net of 64. Ruther Linder had the fewest putts (28) in the third flight.

A few years back I wrote that saltwater shore fishermen never get any respect. Since the price of a gallon of gas is now rivaling the price of the Hope Diamond, things may be changing. Hauling a boat down to the ramp and launching for a day of fishing is still great fun, unless you have to do certain things like eating. So, fishing from the sand or pier may be making a comeback even among those who have those pretty boats sitting in the front yard. Don’t worry, if you’re on dry land or wading into the water, you can still catch fish.

The second- and third-place finishers in the Jolly Mon King Classic earned their money Saturday. After they landed their prize catches, they had to battle through a ferocious storm.

Keith Logan aboard Logan’s Love finished second (36.65) and collected $7,750. He thanked Hunter McCray of the Rod and Reel Shop on Holden Beach. Logan fished in the Gen. Sherman Wreck area. Logan, of Longs, S.C., landed his king mackerel about 7:15 a.m.

Jamie Blue of Carthage and Joel Foster of High Point had an unforgettable fishing experience in the Jolly Mon King Classic Saturday.

They are fortunate to still be alive to talk about it.

They were among the competitors in the two-day tournament that attracted 294 boats. But a fierce, fast-moving storm Saturday morning capsized one boat and left one person dead. Two others from that boat were rescued.

That more people did not die is remarkable, considering how powerful the storm was.
