    Gary Stewart, 72, of Carolina Shores shot his age or better four times during the month of May. He had one round of 72, two of 71 and one of 69. He played all four of those rounds at his home course of Carolina Shores.

  • Hensley and Gore the best of the...

    Greg Hensley has been selected to represent the First Tee of Brunswick County at the 2008 Summer Leadership and Life Skills Academy July 8-15 at Kansas State University.

    He will join 100 other First Tee members from around the country and the world for a week of leadership building, life skills workshops and golf. They will stay in dormitories while being chaperoned by Kansas State students who are involved with the leadership curriculum offered at the university.

    Last year, Eric Grant represented the Brunswick County chapter of The First Tee at the Leadership Academy.

  • First Tee Wal-Mart Tournament...

    The First Tee of Brunswick County is the sole beneficiary of the inaugural Wal-Mart Invitational Sept. 23 at The Thistle Golf Club.

    All Brunswick County Wal-Mart stores will be participating in this golf tournament. Brent Guice, manager of the Shallotte Wal-Mart, will spearhead the effort.

    Tyler Lewis pitched the Bulldogs to the victory in the game June 2.

    For the Bulldogs, James White and Matt Lowry had two singles and a double. T.J. Faircloth and Lucas Ganey had two singles. Phillip Czuprynski singled.

    For the Seahawks, Phillip Gause and Markel Jones singled.

    DODGERS 18, METS 6

    For the Dodgers, Gary Williams was 2-for-4 with a home run in the game June 2. Ra’Shawn Washington was 2-for-3. Greg Burton-White was 2-for-2. Adam Franklin was 4-for-4. Willie McRae was 2-for-3. Jason Stancil was 3-for-5.

  • McCumbee eager to race in Texas

    Chad McCumbee is 10th in the standings in the 2008 driver’s championship race as he and the rest of the Craftsman Truck Series head to Texas for the Sam’s Town 400. McCumbee and Team MRD look for redemption as they return to the site of their breakout race of 2007. The team took the lead prior to the last caution of the race but came up just short of their first victory following an on-track incident on the ensuing green-white-checkered restart. The race is scheduled for Friday and will be televised live on Speed starting at 8:30 p.m.

  • Kyle Busch dominates at Dover

    DOVER, Del.—Toyota driver Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs Racing tamed Dover’s Monster Mile Sunday. Busch led 158 laps of the 400-lap race and crossed the finish line nearly six seconds ahead of the runner-up, Carl Edwards.

    “The guys on pit road did a phenomenal job,” Busch said. “We didn’t have the best car at the start of the race. We had about a third-place car and they gave me what I needed to win the race.”

    It was Busch’s fourth win of the season but the first for him at Dover.

  • Deep NASCAR pool creates some...

    I was having a nice end-of-weekend lunch recently, and the stranger sitting next to me observed that Sunday afternoons are pretty boring when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races are on Saturday night. I agreed.

    Then we moved on to the results of the previous night’s race, followed by a discussion of NASCAR’s Fab Four: Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and that other fellow. What’s his name again? Oh, right, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

    Then, the inevitable question — “Who’s your driver?”

  • Brunswick County drivers win...

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Brunswick County drivers won four of the stock car classes Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    In Mini Stock, the Fulfords swept the top-three places. Adam was first, Dub second and Willie third. Terry Evans was fourth.

    In Street Stock, Tommy Poole was first, Dean Cumbee second and Kent Bellamy third.

    Brent Brinson won both of the 40-lap Late Model races. Sam Yarborough was second in the second race.

    Saturday will be Bell and Bell Night’s Pontiac Excitement Sun Fun 101.

  • Cheers heard in gym, but not for...

    The grandfather stood at the lectern during the West Brunswick High School Senior Awards Program and with pride announced the winner of a scholarship from the organization he represented: his grandson.

    When they hugged, it seemed as if everyone else in the gym also felt the embrace.

    For most of the morning, the emotion was the same as dozens and dozens of scholarships were awarded to the WBHS Class of ’08.

  • The question: To fish or not to...

    An old fishing friend pulled up to the docks of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center the other day and we began rehashing old fish stories. We went through a laundry list of tall tales, and it became apparent we just aren’t fishing as much as we used to. This conversation was taking place as he fueled his boat, and one glance at the dollars-to-gallons ratio made it quite evident as to why we aren’t fishing as much.

    It is darn expensive.
