Six of South’s victories met regional-qualifying standards.

Led by all-conference golfers Harrison Taylor and Greg Hensley, the West Brunswick High School golf team Monday won the Class 3-A title of the Mideastern Conference.

The championship qualifies West for the Class 3-A East Regional, to be played May 4 at Maccripine Country Club in Pinetops. The top three teams and the top three players not on those teams qualify for Class 3-A state championships May 11-12 at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek.

  • West completes sweep of county...

The West Brunswick girls’ soccer team completed a sweep of county teams by beating North Brunswick 4-0 Monday at West.

Two West goals were disallowed because of offsides. The Lady Trojans improved to 8-8 for the year.

West scored twice in the first half, the first goal eight minutes into the game on a pass from junior forward Taylor Ambrose to senior forward Mariah Evans. Her kick in the box went through the legs of the North goalkeeper.

  • Memory, Gause homer as West...

JACKSONVILLE—Two-run home runs by Alex Memory and Jay Gause scored all of West Brunswick’s runs in a 4-0 victory Friday over White Oak in a Mideastern Conference baseball game.

The low-scoring game was surprising, considering the Trojans had beaten the Vikings 17-0 last month.

The victory improved West’s record to 7-1 in the conference, 16-3 overall, and keeps it in the running for the MEC title. West’s one MEC loss is to Laney, and the two teams have a rematch on Senior Night April 30 at West.

BOILING SPRING LAKES—The South Brunswick girls’ soccer team remained unbeaten in the Waccamaw Conference by beating Pender 6-0 April 22.

The Cougars beat the Patriots 8-0 April 8, but in the first half of the rematch Pender put more pressure on the South defense and goalkeeper Elizabeth Butler, who made several saves.

South finally scored 11 minutes into the game on a 20-yard shot by junior Kayla Carmichael. Just before the half ended, junior Ashley Briggs scored. Junior Ann Burton had the assist.

  • Bull's eye: Skirmishers use...

STATESVILLE—Norman Horne, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, often wondered what it was like to use Civil War weapons. A television program a few years ago rekindled that interest.

“They were having cannon competition,” he said. “I thought, ‘Well, that looks like it might be fun.’”

Two years ago, he and Joe Newman, both Brunswick County residents, went as spectators to the North-South Skirmish Association national matches, near Winchester, Va.
