You can have dozens of lessons (like me), read golf instructional books (like me), watch golf videos (like me) and still have a lousy game (like me).

When we first moved here and I had the freedom to play golf anytime, my game improved and I actually broke 80 twice. My handicap went down, I won some tournaments and was happy as a clam (or Rory McIlroy, when he won the PGA Championship earlier this month).

     Trojans, Scorpions finish scoreless

The North Brunswick and West Brunswick football teams played a scoreless scrimmage in the BB&T Football Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 15, in Wilmington.

For West, defensive back Davonte Hewett intercepted a pass. Lineman Daniel McRainey forced a fumble and Jimmy Cochran recovered the fumble.

The Scorpions’ defense prevented the Trojans from scoring inside the 5-yard line.

SHALLOTTE — Bob Hanna is using no shortcuts as he takes over as coach of the West Brunswick High School football team.

A stern remark during an interview discussing the team’s starters revealed Hanna’s no-nonsense approach.

    “I grade film,” he said.

Just a few weeks after being hired after a 20-year career at Irmo (S.C.) High School, where he was 163-93 and reached three state title games, Hanna has assessed the Trojan program and the work he and his staff need to do.

    By Capt. Derek Treffinger

It has once again been another tough week for anglers in Brunswick County. Between the torrential rainstorms and gale force winds, it seems fishermen can’t catch a break. The storms that stalled across our coastline last week produced torrential rains, which dirtied our near shore waters. This shattered almost every angler’s hope to catch Spanish mackerel along the beach this week.

BOILING SPRING LAKES — A winless 2013 football season has given some South Brunswick seniors a winning attitude as the 2014 season begins.

New coach Daniel Finn praised the leadership of three seniors, which includes quarterback Cole Blackburn.

“During practices he’s making our kids do things they should be doing when the coaches aren’t available,” Finn said. “He’s been a very pleasant surprise for us.”

LELAND — Garry Bishop knows how to use talent. The latest proof of that was the indoor and outdoor state championships he coached the North Brunswick boys’ track and field teams in 2014.

Entering his 21st season as head coach of the Scorpion football team, Bishop once again is assigning players to positions that fit their talent and will help North win football games.
