    The Ashley High School baseball team beat West 3-2 April 28 in Wilmington, ending the Trojans’ 19-game winning streak.

    The Screaming Eagles scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a double, an intentional walk and a single.

    The loss prevented West from clinching a tie for the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference title. West is 9-1 in the conference with two games left. The Trojans are 20-2 overall.

    West pitcher Kevin Powers gave up four hits and one earned run in seven innings. He walked one, hit one and struck out five.

    Hed: Tennis players qualify for regional

    Staff Report

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH — South Brunswick senior Dalton Adams and sophomore John Pratt and won the Mideastern Conference 3A championship tennis tournament April 28 at Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center.

    The South doubles team beat West Brunswick’s Kevin Gore and Tyler Mayo in three sets.

    All four players also qualified for a North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A regional, which is a qualifier for the state tournament.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Topsail 4-1 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference baseball game April 26 on Mike Alderson Field.

    The victory was West’s 19th straight this season, giving it an overall record of 20-1. The streak ended in a 3-2 loss April 28 at Ashley High School. (See summary below).

    Against Topsail, winning pitcher Johnathan Carlyle gave up four hits in seven innings. His record is 7-0. His ERA is 0.75. He leads the team in innings pitched (55.2).

  • BCC signs two West Brunswick...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick senior infielders Zachary Johnson and Tristan Lewis signed letters of intent April 26 to attend Brunswick Community College and play baseball.

    “I’m excited,” BCC coach Robbie Allen said. “We’ve always tried to recruit the kids from our county, and getting these two guys, that’s a big step. These two are from good families and are good players.”

    Johnson has played third base and first base this season.

    Brunswick County is a beehive of charity golf events. During much of the year, two or three charity golf events take place each week at courses from Leland to Calabash.

    Some raise funds for national charities like the Wounded Warrior Project, the American Cancer Society and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Other charity events are for a local need. Someone’s house burns down; a family experiences a life-changing accident or devastating illness. Sometimes funds are raised for the hungry and the homeless.

The chaos begins with just one or two boats that head to the Gulf Stream in search of a tug on the line. Typically, these boats return to the dock with decent success, which also sparks interest of more anglers to venture offshore. Then, before you know it, dozens of boats are returning to the dock with incredible tales all revolving around one thing: the late spring mahi mahi run.
