  • Fish continue to bite after...

Hurricane Matthew ripped through our county a couple weeks ago and with it came record-setting flood waters to inland areas and destruction to properties along the beach. Aside from the horrific damage Matthew caused, folks who suffered minor damage or none at all began to wonder how the storm would affect the fishing. Before the storm, fishing was in full swing with fish biting from the surf to the Gulf Stream. However, once Matthew made its presence upon the Carolina coast, our fantastic fall fishery came to a screeching halt.

Over the years, tournament king mackerel fishermen begin to realize that no matter how hard they try, some days are good, and some are bad. It typically isn’t the bait, boat or skirt you have tied to your leader. It’s usually about finding the right spot and hoping your number gets called. It’s a waiting game and all you can do is hope that patience pays off. On Saturday, Oct. 1,  it paid off for my wife, Kelly, and I, as well as the rest of team OIFC: Brant, Amy, Brayden, Caroline and Barrett McMullan.
