  • Red drum are fun to catch and...

Last week the state closed all commercial harvest of red drum, a move that will probably last until September when the cap on commercial catches of the fish resets. The way North Carolina tries to manage this very important fish continues to change, and a lot of folks are currently debating the issues surrounding red drum in the state’s committee structure.

Red drum are the state’s official saltwater fish, and they have always been a symbol of inshore fishing here even though a lot of other Southern states also can claim large red-drum populations.

  • Short-game workout will bring...

We live in a temperate climate here on the Carolina coast, yet many of us want to play golf only under the most favorable conditions. The golfers who move here from Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania are the worst. They played in sleet and wind up North; they loved winter golf leagues because the ponds all froze up.

Something strange happens to these stalwart golfers after a few years of “Southern comfort.” They get wimpy about the weather.

Sandy Reynolds made a hole-in-one on the second hole at the Byrd Course on April 4. She followed her ace with an eagle on hole No. 3 by chipping in from off the green.

  • Smiles already ordered; Special...

The smile of a boy in a wheelchair is what stays on Steve Goodwin’s mind.

Goodwin was a volunteer at the Special Olympics while he was a student at East Carolina University.

This year, he’s the director of the Brunswick County Special Olympics Spring Games.

“Just seeing the joy in the athletes’ faces—big smiles, happiness,” Goodwin said as he described his most rewarding moments at the Special Olympics.

He remembers the joy on the face of a boy in a wheelchair in particular.

  • Hamlin posts first triumph in...

MARTINSVILLE, Va.—Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Fed-Ex Toyota, took the lead in Sunday’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 from Jeff Burton on lap 424 and led the remaining 76 laps. It was Hamlin’s first win of the season and the second for Toyota.

“This was the first Virginia win for me,” said Hamlin of Chesterfield, Va. “Hopefully, the curse of winning in my home state is over.

“We’ve had a lot of bad luck these past few weeks, and it feels good to come here and get a win in front of the hometown fans.”

  • Sounds a lot like NASCAR fans

The following is the completely falsified transcript of a conversation, which never took place between Mike and Maggie, two people who do not exist. I did not overhear this conversation, nor one remotely like it, and probably never will. The made-up names have not been changed.

Mike: “Hey, did you watch 'Lost Idol Survivor Apprentice' last weekend?”

Maggie: “Of course, I did. I never miss one. What did you think about that ending?”

Mike: “Fantastic. I never saw it coming—definitely a wild finish.”

  • Comment uncalled for in local...

I’m sure no one in the stands heard this comment—not the parents nor the fans nor even the coaches.

The only reason I heard it is because I was taking pictures and sitting between the nets of two matches.

A visiting high school tennis player asked a West Brunswick player, “How’s the marching band here?”

I thought it was a bizarre question to ask someone between points and became curious about why he asked it. Little did I realize it was a set-up.

“Well, I guess they’re not so good,” the West Brunswick player said.

  • Tandem rig increases your...

Spring anglers often have to contend with instability, from the weather, to which fish will bite on a given day. That is one reason people talk about “runs” of fish, though in all my years I have never seen a fish run. The fish are like the changing weather: here one day, gone the next.

  • Order of play perplexing, but it...

Order of play is a concept that is often misunderstood. In simplest terms, it refers to who goes first in a group of golfers on the tee box, in the fairway, the rough and on the green. Even in hazards and ground under repair, there is an order of play.

This can all sound trivial to a non-golfer, or someone who does not play a lot of competitive golf, but it is important to know what the order of play is.
