  • North boys, South girls dominate...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES—North Brunswick’s boys and South Brunswick’s won most of the events in the county meet April 18 at South.

    In the boys’ meet, North won 10 events.

    North’s Brandon Addison won the 400 in 52.44, beating West’s B.J. Bellamy by 0.01 seconds. Addison won the long jump in 19-4.

    J.J. Batts won the 800 in 2:07, beating West’s Spencer Waters by 4 seconds. 

    Kevon Perkins won the 100 in 10.87. Teammate Chris Graham was second in 10.93.

  • South honors championship...

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—South Brunswick has placed a sign near the baseball field to honor the 1988 state championship team. Team members were honored before the Cougars’ home game April 18.

    The 1988 team won South Brunswick’s first state championship during a memorable season in which the Cougars finished 29-0 and claimed the championship at Cougar field.

    Relay for Life tourney is set for April 20
    Town Creek Elementary School is sponsoring a golf tourney April 20 at Magnolia Greens and the proceeds benefit Relay for Life. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per golfer, $240 per team, and covers lunch. To register, call Stella Tucker at (910) 253-6500 or email stucker@bcswan.net by April 1.

    Brick Landing LGA
    On April 11, The Brick Landing Plantation Ladies Golf Association played is first league match of the season. In the first flight, Carol Fredericks was first with a net 68, Mary Tacea second with an 82 and Mary Biesack third with an 83. Kathy Mularczyk took first in the second flight with a net 69. Nancy Dickerson was second with a 77 and Lois Huber third with an 83. Carol Fredericks is the April Ace of the Month winner.

    A few months ago, my dear friend Carol Fredericks broached an idea with me and I loved it.
    Carol and her husband, Bill, belong to Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey. Built in 1890, the venerable old Donald Ross design was the site of the 1978 U.S. Amateur and the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open. In 2011, Plainfield hosted The Barclays. Plainfield is listed No. 71 in the Golf Digest 100 Greatest Courses in the United States.  

  • Grossi wins Sea Trail Charm...

    In the Sea Trail Charm Tournament April 8 at the Byrd Course and April 10 at the Jones Course, Kathy Grossi finished first with a two-day total of 130, winning the gold charm. Joan Mason was second (136) and won the silver charm.

  • Crow Creek plays member tourney

    On April 2-3, the Crow Creek MGA played a two-day member-member tournament for 20 two-man teams. In cool weather, the golf skills exhibited by most of the participants were red hot. The format for the first day was a shamble, which combines elements of a scramble with elements of two-man best ball.
    As in a scramble, both players of a team tee off and the best drive is selected. From that point, the hole is played out at stroke play, with both players playing their own ball into the hole. The format for the second day was a scramble.

    On June 1, The First Tee of Brunswick County will be host of its third annual Future Generations Tournament on all four golf courses of the St. James Plantation. Its success and your participation will help shape the future of the many kids who are participants in The First Tee of Brunswick County.

    The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association played its spring member-member tournament April 3 and April 8 on Panther’s Run and Lion’s Paw. The format was nine holes each of captain’s choice, duck soup, alternate shot and better net of partner.
