    The PGA Merchandise Show took place last week at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. More than a thousand golf companies participated. All the latest of everything that is golf was there. If you wanted to see it, or be seen, it was there. Equipment, clothing, gadgets, training aids, PGA Tour pros and celebrities were around every corner.  In addition, there were countless opportunities for PGA professionals like me to educate themselves and share thoughts and philosophies with other colleagues.

    LELAND — Sixty seconds from fulfilling an 11-year dream — winning a conference championship — North Brunswick coach Travis Fortune pressed a white towel to his face. His Scorpions were about to scupper Northside-Jacksonville 83-63 — considered one of the top Class 2A teams in the region — and clinch the East Central Conference basketball championship Tuesday, Feb. 7.

    In the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Super Bowl Sunday takes on an added dimension: The game is played somewhere warm or in an indoor stadium. Players and fans wear short-sleeve shirts. The cheerleaders wear skimpy tops and bottoms. And knee-high boots. Men wear suits and ties. The women have great hair and makeup.

    The email from South Brunswick swim coach Sam Jennings expressed the news well: “2nd overall in region!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

    He was referring to the performance of the Cougar boys in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A East Regional on Friday in Cary. The meet was a qualifier for the state meet this week, also in Cary.

    The Cougars might as well have stayed in Cary. In finishing second, South’s boys qualified for every state event except the 500 freestyle.

    BOLIVIA — The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team fell behind 28-13 but rallied to take a 54-53 lead before losing 63-62 to Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday.

    For BCC (2-9 in NJCAA Division II Region 10, 10-9 overall), Lauren Jenkins scored 22 points in the game at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    Other BCC scorers: Briana Jones nine, Leilani Emile eight, Andrea Raynor seven, Lakita Basnight seven, Sydney Harrison five, Danielle Brisson four.
