  • Making use of Christmas gifts

    By Darren deMaille

If you are a golfer, chances are you were given some gifts this year related to golf, some good and maybe some not so. I am a difficult person to shop for, as I usually have everything I need related to golf; however, this year there were a few great gifts that Santa brought to me. Now, two weeks post Christmas, it has given me time to make use of these gifts. Here are my reviews. Please feel free to share your reviews with me or stop by the DD Golf Academy to show them to me.

  • South’s boys dominate tri-meet

BOLIVIA — The South Brunswick boys’ swim team won all 11 events — 10 of them in regional standards — in finishing first in a tri-meet with fellow 3A teams Topsail and West Brunswick.

South scored 129.50 points, Topsail 84.50 and West 45 in the meet Jan. 6 at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

This is the second straight meet South has swept all 11 races and attained regional standards in 10 of them.

  • With the new year, begin a new...

I thank Elsa Bronstein for the wonderful introduction last week and her service with the Beacon for the last several years. She left big shoes to fill and I hope I can bring the same enjoyment she has given to so many people over the years. I wish her the best of luck with her new ventures and may she continue to touch people as she has done.

  • Hoping for great weather, great...

The past few weeks have been filled with shopping and traveling to see relatives, but believe it or not the new year is finally here. There have been many different forecasts and predictions for how good and bad the fishing will be, but this week, I’d like to give a quick recap of what good and bad occurred in 2016.

  • Trojans sweep foes in CFA tourney

WILMINGTON — The West Brunswick girls’ and boys’ basketball team each won three games in the fifth annual Cape Fear Academy Holiday Basketball Challenge.

West’s boys are 8-2 and West’s girls are 5-6. Game summaries are below.

    Girls

West Brunswick beat Wilmington Christian Academy 53-27 in a first-round girls basketball game Dec. 29 in the Holiday Basketball Challenge.

  • Darren deMaille new golf...

Exciting news for the readers of Golf Gab: You will have a new golf columnist starting in January. Darren deMaille will be taking over and I’m thrilled.

I met deMaille last week for lunch and we had a great visit. He is one terrific guy, a PGA pro and a teacher of the game of golf who owns the Double D Golf Academy in Little River, S.C.

In addition to his golf credentials, he has written about golf for newspapers in Connecticut, New York and Florida. He recently published an article in Golf Digest about starting a teaching academy.

  • Scorpions lose twice in tourney...

BOLIVIA — The North Brunswick boys’ basketball team lost its two games in the inaugural Brunswick County Sherriff’s Office Christmas Tournament.

East Columbus beat the Scorpions 53-51 Dec. 19 and Whiteville beat the Scorpions 84-73 Dec. 20 in games at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    North is 2-7 this season.

In a first-round game, East Columbus took a 53-51 lead with 71 seconds left on a pull-up jump shot.

  • This is the season to be fishing...

As winter proceeds to dig its roots into our region, hard northeast and southwest winds have sent most fishermen either into a tree stand or back inside the inlet in search of redfish and trout. Although both alternatives can produce action-filled days, they rarely fill the void of hearing an outrigger pop or simply being out of cellphone range for a while — both urges that drive fishermen to extremes at times. Yet with the average wave height of 6 feet last week, almost everyone has turned to his next best opportunity at outdoor excitement.

  • South’s boys win all 11 swim...

BOLIVIA — South Brunswick’s boys won all 11 swim events — 10 in regional standards — in a four-team conference meet Friday, Dec. 16, at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

“Never happened in my tenure,” South coach Sam Jennings said about the dominant performance.

South scored 171 points in its best performance of the season. Topsail was second (123), Laney third (74) and West Brunswick fourth (70).
