  • Simmons set to play volleyball...

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick senior Katie Simmons has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Brunswick Community College.

    “I really wanted to play volleyball,” Simmons said about her decision to sign with BCC. “Plus, I wanted to stay close to home.”

    Simmons was a setter for the Trojans, who finished the 2014 season 4-8 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference, 7-14 overall.

     The Brunswick County women’s golf champions for 2014 are an eclectic group.

    Some have won their club championships numerous times in the past 11 years; others are new to this elite order. Some started golf when they were children, others learned the game at midlife. All are excited to be the best of the best at their club for this year.

    The Brunswick Beacon Tournament of Champions is Nov. 15-16 at Rivers Edge. Women’s and men’s champions in Brunswick County will compete in two rounds of medal play.

     BOLIVIA — The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team opened its season by beating South Carolina Sports Academy 110-94 Nov. 4 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    For BCC, Carson Smith hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points. Cortell Busby scored 16 points and Robin Moore, Najee Pritchett and Kevin Rowell each scored 14.

     The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team celebrates its 20th year of existence this season, and Walter Shaw enters his 15th season as its head coach.

    The Dolphins finished the 2013-14 Region 10 regular season 7-3 and in a tie for first. They lost to Cape Fear in the Region 10 championship tournament and finished 20-12. Shaw, who guided BCC to its 10th 20-victory season in 14 years, was the Region 10 Coach of the Year.

    West Brunswick senior Cameryn Smith finished eighth Oct. 28 in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Class 3-A girls’ state golf championships at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

     I heard about the Jersey Girls through mutual friends and became intrigued.

    A group of gals from New Jersey has been coming to Brunswick County each fall for 20 years. They stay in the same house for a week. They play golf, shop, and eat in, taking turns cooking and cleaning up.
