Our first week of great weather came to a screaming halt Friday morning. We had our first good low-pressure system dump several inches of rain on us very fast. We needed the rain, but getting it all at once can really make backwater fishing a challenge.

Whiteville beat West Brunswick 3-2 in a conference softball game April 11 in Shallotte.
The loss dropped West to 4-3 in the conference. Entering this week, five conference games are left.
For West, Caroline Gore started and gave up two hits and two earned runs in four innings. She walked two and struck out five.
Kim Cook finished, giving up three hits and walking none. She struck out one.

The West Brunswick boys’ tennis team won two conference matches last week, beating North Brunswick 9-0 on April 10 and beating South Columbus 7-2 April 11.
“We had a very good week,” West coach Bob Bell said. “Both wins were against conference opponents, and South Columbus had beaten us a week ago. That reflects the progress the kids have been working so hard for.  
“Jason Watts hasn’t lost in five matches and Campbell Alspaugh has a four-match winning streak.”

 LELAND—West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 10-5 in a conference baseball game April 16 at North.

The Trojans scored seven runs in the second inning en route to the victory.

Ryan Caison was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits and three runs (two unearned) in 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Carson Tew gave up two hits and two unearned runs in 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one.
