  • Trojans drop a pair of league...

SHALLOTTE – The West Brunswick High School varsity boys’ soccer team plays several freshmen and sophomores in one of the toughest soccer conferences in the Tar Heel State.

The team has exceeded preseason expectations, but ran into a pair of buzzsaws last week in Hoggard and Topsail.

A powerhouse Hoggard squad handed West Brunswick (5-6-1, 1-4-1) a 9-1 defeat Sept. 28 in Wilmington.

  • Trojans secure critical...

SHALLOTTE – A high school volleyball match can’t be any closer than West Brunswick’s conference match against Topsail on Sept. 26.

The Trojans desperately needed a victory to stay alive in the race for one of the league’s two playoff berths for Class 3A teams.

West Brunswick got just that with a heart-stopping 3-2 win over the Pirates in Shallotte last week.

  • Tenth annual event raises $22,...

SUNSET BEACH – Angela Nicholson simply nods her head, partly in disbelief and partly satisfaction, when she looks at the final numbers.

As Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club finished hosting its 10th Annual Pretty in Pink Golf Tournament and Auction on Wednesday, Sept. 27, Nicholson tallied the final numbers and realized the events have raised more than $200,000 in the last 10 years.

  • Breaking down the Beacon Pigskin...

If you turn to page 6B in this week’s sports section, you’ll see the Week 5 predictions. You’ll look down to the know-it-all sports editor’s picks and wonder how in the world he picked a Dallas Cowboys team that couldn’t beat the Rams at home to beat Green Bay next week.

Your skepticism is most likely warranted as I have stumbled out of the gates this season to a 24-15 record through four weeks of the Beacon Pigskin Challenge.

Not a terrible record, but not a great one, either.

  • Trojans use first-half explosion...

LELAND – After a 7-0 victory Sept. 22 over Ashley High School, West Brunswick head football coach Kelly Williamson said he was still waiting for his offense to click as the Trojans get into the meat of their conference schedule.

Williamson and his staff can wait no more.

West Brunswick amassed 294 total yards on 34 plays in the first half alone of a 28-7 victory over county rival North Brunswick inside Garry Bishop Stadium in Leland on Friday, Sept. 29.

  • West Brunswick girls’ tennis...

OCEAN ISLE BEACH – West Brunswick head women’s tennis coach Scott Mehalick has coached tennis for more than 30 years.

He coached a pair of individual regional champions as the head coach of the men’s team at West and has led several squads to the state playoffs.

Taking into account all of the teams he has coached in a highly successful career, Mehalick says this year’s team “is as good of a group as I’ve ever had.”

  • Southport plays host to national...
  • Beacon Pigskin Challenge

District Court Judge Jason Disbrow leads the Beacon Pigskin Challenge through three weeks with a 20-9 record. State Farm's Kristin Dowdy and Beacon sports editor Sam Hickman are tied for second place with 18-11 ledgers.

  • West Brunswick soccer plays to 2...

The West Brunswick High School varsity soccer team dropped a conference game against New Hanover, 2-1, and tied Ashley, 2-2, last week.

The Trojans played Topsail on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at M.H. Rourk Stadium in Shallotte. Scroll through the slideshow to see photos of West Brunswick's game against Ashley.
