    LELAND — West Brunswick won six weight classes on the way to winning the team title in the Scorpion Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10, at North Brunswick.

    At 113, Shane Smith beat his Grays Creek foe by second-period fall.

    At 120, Bautista beat his West Carteret opponent 10-0.

    At 126, Lincoln Smith beat his Trask competitor 16-1.

    At 138, Alspaugh beat North’s Alex Locklear by fall in the third period.

    At 182, Fullerton beat his West Carteret foe 4-1 and remained unbeaten this season.

  • Bridge Run for Food

    Frank Pepp, 35, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., won the 11th annual Ocean Isle Bridge Run for Food half-marathon Saturday, Jan. 10.

    In 29-degree weather, Pepp ran the 13-mile course in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 23 seconds.

    Abraham Hernandez, 18, of High Point, finished second in 1:23.42. Luke Evans, 14, of Asheboro, finished third in 1:23.47.

    Misty White, 39, was the top female runner in the half marathon, finishing in 1:36.38. She was 12th overall.

  • Trojans defeat Hoggard; now 15-0

     

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick boys’ basketball team beat Hoggard 51-48 Friday, Jan. 9, remaining in first place in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference (5-0) and remaining unbeaten this season (15-0).

    Lockwood Folly Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball sign-ups are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14, at Cedar Grove Middle School.

    Sign-ups are also 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day at the Supply Fire Department.

    Fee is $55 for one player, $100 for two, $150 for three. Fee for Wee/Tee ball is $45.

  • South’s girls win three-team...

       BOLIVIA — The South Brunswick girls’ swim team won a tri-meet Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center pool.

    South scored 112 points, New Hanover 107 and West Brunswick 15.

    South freshman Hannah Scharf won the 50 freestyle (28.21). Senior teammate Lauren Johnson was second.

    Scharf won the 100 backstroke (1:11.44). Senior teammate Brinkley Farmer was second and West senior Katelyn Ludlum was third.

  • Trojan wrestlers defeat Cougars...

    BOILING SPRING LAKES —  The West Brunswick wrestling team beat South Brunswick 65-12 in a conference match Wednesday, Jan. 7, and improved to 17-0 for the season.

    The Trojans won five matches by fall and two by technical fall.

    West has one Mideastern 3A/4A Conference match left, Jan. 28 at New Hanover.

    The Trojans wrestle in the conference championship tournament Jan 31 (site to be determined). The state dual playoffs are the first week in February. The individual state championships are Feb. 20-21 in Greensboro.

  • Trojans defeat New Hanover,...

     WILMINGTON — West Brunswick beat host New Hanover 72-70 in a conference boys’ basketball game Jan. 6 and improved to 14-0 this season.

    Saadiq Johnson (28 points, seven 3-pointers) and Gray Cheers (31 points, 12 of 12 free throws) scored 59 of West’s 72 points.

    The first quarter ended 13-13. Johnson scored 11 of West’s 13 first-quarter points. He hit one field goal, two 3-pointers and three of three free throws.
