    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Laney 5-1 in a conference softball game Friday, March 18.

    Winning pitcher Morgan Beeler gave up five hits an one unearned run. She walked five and struck out three.

    West finished width seven hits. Savannah Branch had a hit. McKenzie Benton doubled. Kayla Miller had two hits and one RBI. Izzy Smeltzer had a hit and one RBI. Randaisa Daniels had two hits and one RBI. Katelyn Fulford had a sacrifice RBI. Christian Strickland had one RBI.

    The weather could not have been any more perfect than the final days of last week. The winds were light in the morning with the no-see-ums chewing the flesh off my bones. By midmorning a warm breeze kept the no-see-ums at bay and allowed me to come out of my hoodie. It looks as if our last cool blast will have passed us by the time you read this column and we will be in a true springtime pattern. It is looking like a typical spring break for our students with warm weather and a slight chance of showers each day. It is definitely time to get after the fish.

  • McCumbee, McAleer fourth at...

    Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer finished fourth Saturday, March 19, in the Sebring 150 at Sebring International Raceway in Florida.

    The race was the second this season in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series. They drove a Mazda MX-5 in the Street Tuner class.

    McCumbee, a Supply native, and McAleer won the season title last year.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Laney 10-2 in a conference baseball game Friday, March 18, on Mike Alderson Field.

    Winning pitcher Kevin Powers gave up three hits and struck out five in allowing one earned run in six innings. He hit three batters and walked none. Laney made two errors.

    Hunter Ashburn pitched the final inning, striking out the side.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick’s Xavier Gause triple-jumped 44 feet, 1 inch in leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Trojans in the event in a track and field meet March 17 at West.

    Gause’s mark was a regional standard. Anthony McCray was second (41-10) and Brandyn Parker third (40-7).

    Those finishes helped West finish second in the team competition (89 points), four points fewer than Ashley High School.  Topsail scored 85 points, New Hanover 65 and Whiteville 37.
