     The Beachcombers played a 3-man team, all-nets tournament Friday, Feb. 28, at Meadowlands. The winners with a score of 224 were Tom Culverwell, Jim Ritter and Dick Cecil. Second were Jim Fitzner, Jim Beairsto and Bob Smith, 233. Low round: Culverwell, 92. Net: Culverwell, 69. Culverwell is golfer of the week.

  • New owner brings new vision to...

     Sea Trail Golf Resort and its three fabulous golf courses have long been a favorite with me and my family. Twenty-five years ago, the Maples Course opened, followed by the Byrd Course, then the Jones.

    Odd names, perhaps, but not when you realize the courses were designed by three of the most pre-eminent golf course architects in the world: Dan Maples, Willard Byrd and Rees Jones. Each was a pleasure to play and they were always on our list of courses when we came down to the Grand Strand on family vacations.

  • BCC beats Patrick Henry 9-0

    BOLIVIA — The Brunswick Community College baseball team beat Patrick Henry Community College 9-0 in seven innings Saturday, March 1, at Founders Field.

    In chilly weather, Alex Ministeri pitched all seven innings and walked no one. He gave up four hits and struck out seven.

    BCC scored eight runs in the second, taking advantage of two errors, two wild pitches and a hit batter.

  • Trojans open baseball season...

     SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick High School baseball team beat North Brunswick 6-4 in a season-opening game Friday, Feb. 28, at West.

    In chilly weather, winning pitcher Carson Tew walked none in six innings. He gave up seven hits and one run. He struck out three.

    Josh Cribb got the save. He entered the game in the seventh after North had scored three runs against Tristan Lewis and cut the lead to 6-4. Cribb inherited a 1-0 count with one out but ended the game with two pop flyballs.

  • West Brunswick wins sectional,...

     SHALLOTTE — The line was mightier than the arc.

    The Southern Spartans sank a dozen 3-pointers, but the West Brunswick Trojans kept hammering out one point at a time and nailed their last 14 free throws in a row to take a nail-biting 81-79 win Friday night.

    The victory gave West a sectional championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state basketball tournament and sends the Trojans to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. West last won a sectional in 2003.

     SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer team lost 5-2 to Richlands on Thursday, Feb. 27, in a non-conference, season-opening game at West.

    The West Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team will play its most significant game in 11 years at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at West when it plays for a sectional title against Southern Durham (17-10) in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

    West last won a sectional in 2003.

    “Obviously, we’re excited,” West coach Eric Davis said after the game Wednesday Feb. 26, against Cleveland. “We got to keep our emotions in check. That’s a big win for our program,”

  • Trojans advance to sectional...

      SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Cleveland 70-51 in a second-round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state basketball playoffs.

    The Trojans will play at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Southern Durham (17-10) for a sectional title and advancement to the East Regional. West last won a sectional and played in a regional in 2003.

    Cleveland, a school in Clayton, has been in existence for four years. With two seniors on its roster, Cleveland was in the state playoffs for the first time. It finished the season 14-12.
