  • County squads prepare for 2017...

West Brunswick High School is coming off one of the most successful seasons in the last 20 years of the football program.

The Trojans, who enter their third season under the leadership of head coach Kelly Williamson, finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-4 record. They advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs before dropping a tight contest against Jacksonville.

  • Football season is upon us

You’ve seen the posts on Facebook. It’s a list of questions and you’re asked to copy and paste, then re-post with your own answers. I finally completed one of those posts a couple of nights ago and one question stuck out like a sore thumb. No, not the question about being kissed under fireworks, but this one, “What’s your favorite season?”

  • Former Trojan holds camp to...

By her own admission, part of Alicia Johnson’s heart is in the Dominican Republic.

She is in Santo Domingo through the first week of August with a group from First Baptist Church of Shallotte.

In an effort to raise money for her fifth trip to the Dominican with First Baptist, the former West Brunswick High School cheerleader held the inaugural “2017 Mini Cheer Camp” for girls ages 3-13.

  • BCC student works on grounds...

Most college students spend their summers working odd jobs and taking their free time with their toes in the sand.

Chase Bell, a student in Brunswick Community College’s horticulture and turfgrass management program, spent at least part of his summer shagging fly balls from major leaguers and hamming it up with the likes of New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.

Bell, a 25-year-old from Georgia who’s been in the BCC turfgrass program for one year, applied for an internship during the 2017 spring semester to work in Jupiter, Fla., for the summer.

  • County senior softball league...

SHALLOTTE – For a softball league that began with five members, six players shy of fielding an actual team, the Brunswick County Senior Softball League is in a good place in 2017.

The league has been in existence since 1996 and gives the county’s senior citizens another outlet in which they can remain active.

  • McCray and Vereen compete in...

Two of the best players in West Brunswick High School football history competed in an all-star game featuring the top high school players in North Carolina.

Running back Anthony “Bubba” McCray and lineman Taye Vereen, who graduated in June, represented the Trojans on July 19 at the 2017 North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School in Greensboro.

McCray totaled 43 yards on six carries, including a 37-yard scamper on the team’s longest carry of the game.

Brunswick County fishing has officially set in to a pure summer pattern. The weather and water temperatures are hot and the tourist activity amongst the Brunswick County islands has reached its peak. Fortunately for the fishermen of our county, the fishing has been very good.
