    Look at all those blue tails up and wagging at us. It was the kind of sight that makes even the most experienced redfish fishermen a little weak in the knees.

  • Good news: The rebirth of...

    More good news for Brunswick County golfers. Brierwood Golf Club has changed hands and is undergoing extensive renovations to the clubhouse.

    In Shallotte, the course flows through old pine forests and small lakes and creeks, with lots of waterfowl and one huge alligator named Charlie. Built in 1967 by Dr. Ben Ward, Brierwood is the oldest golf course community in Brunswick County.

  • McCumbee sixth in sports car race

    Chad McCumbee and Steven McAleer finished sixth in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series race Friday, Sept. 19, at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

    McAleer and McCumbee qualified third (81.238 mph) in the Street Tuner class. They raced a ModSpace Mazda MX-5 for C.J. Wilson Racing, which is based in Austin.

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 14-7 in a non-conference football game Friday, Sept. 19.

    West sophomore running back Anthony McCray scored the winning points on a 74-yard run with 4 minutes, 24 seconds left in the game.

    The score came 18 seconds after North junior quarterback Tiger Bryant scored on a 20-yard run, which, with Armando Lopez’s PAT, tied the score.

     LELAND —North Brunswick beat West Brunswick 26-24, 25-19, 25-17 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 17.

    For North (4-7 overall), sophomore Kaylee Scoggins had five kills and 14 digs. Junior Skylar Watson had eight assists. Senior Jenna Dunsmore had four aces, four kills, eight assists and 12 digs. Senior Macey Bordeaux had two aces, two kills and six digs. Junior Valerie Renna had three aces, eight kills and 11 digs.

  • Topsail beats Trojans 2-1 in...

     HAMPSTEAD — Topsail beat West Brunswick 2-1 in a conference soccer game between two class 3A teams Monday, Sept. 15.

    Topsail took a 2-0 lead on a long-range goal with about 15 minutes left. A red card penalty on Topsail — it was the second yellow on a player — left the Pirates with 10 players for the final 7:55.

    The Trojans took advantage by scoring with 3:44 left. A low, hard shot by junior midfielder John McNeil bounced to the right of the Topsail goalkeeper. Junior forward Jerome Scoggins ran to the ball and kicked it into the goal.

     If fishing runs in your veins, now is the time to be planning that fishing trip. The availability of baitfish is unbelievable right now. Mullet and menhaden are thick from the waterways to the beachfront. Several of the shallow creeks are full of shrimp, too. The predator fish are lurking and the action should get stronger as more cold fronts pass through out area. We just experienced our first good cool down and the fish are starting to stack up.
