  • Lenoir sweeps BCC in doubleheader

    BCC lost 8-0 in eight innings and 18-5 in seven innings to Lenoir in a doubleheader Saturday, May 2, at Founders Field

    In the first game, BCC was held to one hit.

    In the second game, Lenoir scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning on the way to the victory. BCC made four errors in the loss.

    The Dolphins had nine hits. Dillon Stewart was 3-for-4 with a triple. Chase Gehringer hit a home run in the bottom of the first. Nick Debo hit a double.

    BCC is 11-5 in region, 29-15 overall.

  • Trojans finish 7-5 in MEC...

     West Brunswick beat Ashley 6-4 Thursday, April 30, on the final day of the Mideastern 4A/3A Conference baseball season on Mike Alderson Field.

    The Trojans finished 7-5 in the conference; Ashley, which made five errors, finished 5-7.

    The conference championship tournament is next week. The state playoffs are the following week.

    Ashley led 3-1 before West scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth in taking a 5-3 lead.

     LELAND — North Brunswick won nine events in finishing first in the East Central Conference boys’ track and field championship meet April 29.

    North scored 186 points, and 62 of those came from the three jump events.

    Croatan was second (134) in the six-team event.

    Jayhlen Washington won three individual events: the 110-meter hurdles (14.6 seconds), the triple jump (46 feet, 7.5 inches) and the long jump (23-2.5).

    LELAND — West Brunswick finished second in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference championship golf tournament April 28 at Magnolia Greens.

    West shot a 325 and finished 10 strokes behind Laney.

    The Trojans’ top golfer was junior Landon Patterson, who shot a 4-over-par 76 on the 6,200-yard course. He finished third overall.

    Sophomore Tucker Vaughan shot an 80, freshman Spencer Faircloth an 84, senior Drew Boyer an 87 and senior Cole Snyder an 85.

     Most people think the golf course superintendent is a guy who hangs out at the course and cuts grass. Maybe he rakes a few traps and fertilizes once in a while. It’s an easy, cushy job that any dude could do.

    Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

    The golf course superintendent is a highly trained, educated professional who usually has a college degree in agriculture or turf management. Many superintendents have advanced degrees.

    It seems every year I get a text message or an email from a fishing buddy stating he “left them biting,” meaning the fishing was so good the crew was tired of catching what was biting and moved elsewhere to catch something else. It just so happens I got a text message from Cody Tucker, who fished the Gulf Stream last weekend, saying “we left them biting.”

      SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat New Hanover 15-1 in four and one-half innings in a conference softball  game Friday, April 24, at West.

    West finished with 11 hits. It scored five runs in each of the first two innings, three in the third and two in the fourth. McKenzie Benton was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Ariana Thomas was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
