  • North Carolina Wesleyan names...

     The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics hosted its 48th Annual Awards Ceremony on April 24 in the Garner Lobby of the Dunn Center and among those honored was Anna Hart, named the Female Athlete of the Year.

    Hart, a West Brunswick graduate, was a first team all-conference in volleyball and had been named Most Valuable Player.

    More volleyball is in her future. Hart, a senior, has been selected to play in the USA Division 3 All-Star Tournament. Traveling to Brazil, Hart will begin her 10-day experience June 10.

  • North’s boys, South’s girls win...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES—North Brunswick’s boys and South Brunswick’s girls won the Waccamaw Conference track and field championships April 24 at South Brunswick.

    In the boys’ meet, North scored 206 points. South was second (150) and West third (127) in the seven-team meet. North’s boys won eight events, South’s boys six events and West’s boys four events.

  • The First Tee of the Cape Fear...

    In August 2004, I wrote a column about Rusty and Carol Petrea and their dream of establishing a chapter of The First Tee in Brunswick County. They had built a 20-acre golf facility with three greens, multiple tees and a practice putting area. At that time, they were in the process of building a learning center with offices, classrooms and locker rooms.
    In November 2005, that dream came true when The First Tee of Brunswick County received its charter from the national office and became one of nearly 200 chapters in the United States and around the world.

  • Yarbrough, Dub Fulford win...

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—The 2013 racing season was green-flagged Saturday night at Myrtle Beach Speedway. In the first Whelen All-American Series points races, former track champion Sam Yarbrough was on the money as the green flag waved over the Late Models. Yarbrough, starting from the outside pole, was the class of the field. He led all 40 laps in a caution-free race.

  • Kids are little windows to the...

    The conditions were as if they were pulled straight from a fisherman’s dream. The backwater was so settled and calm it appeared to be a mirror.
    The Biersbach family, of Sunset Beach, and I loaded up the boat, putting the first ripples of life onto the surface of the water. You ever get that feeling things are too perfect and something is going to jump out of the shadows at any minute?
    We rounded the corner with the hammer down, rushing to our first area in hopes of catching a few redfish.

  • West softball pitcher Cook signs...

     West Brunswick softball pitcher Kim Cook signed a letter of intent April 24 to attend St. Andrews University.

    Cook is familiar with Laurinburg, site of the university. Some family members live there and her mom is a St. Andrews graduate. Cook considered offers from other colleges, but finally selected St. Andrews. It fulfills a dream.

    “I always wanted to play in college,” she said.

    The 14-player team has four returning pitchers, two of whom are also infielders. Cook’s only position will be pitcher.

  • South’s Pieper wins conference...

     South Brunswick’s Noah Pieper beat defending conference champion Jason Watts, of West Brunswick, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the Waccamaw Conference Class 3A championship tennis tournament April 23 at Ocean Isle Beach Park.

    The championship completed a sweep for South. Caleb Stanley and Gabe Azzato defeated teammates Jarrett Walls and Caleb Hemphill 6-3, 6-0 for the doubles title.

    The singles championship was a close match throughout both sets.

  • BCC volleyball coach has winning...

     BOLIVIA—The new volleyball coach at Brunswick Community College has helped turn a high school program into a consistent winner. And that is what the BCC needs.

    Erin Hagen is BCC’s third volleyball coach in four years. The team won three matches last year, but Hagen knows how to build a program.

    She was an outside hitter at Sterling (Ill.) High School, making second-team all-conference.
