  • Trojan wrestler Harrison...

    West Brunswick senior Harrison Campbell received the Roy Heverly Award on Friday, Sept. 16, in recognition of being the top underclassman scholastic wrestler in eastern North Carolina. The award was announced in June and Campbell was presented it during halftime of the football game between North Brunswick and West Brunswick.

    “It means a lot,” Campbell said after receiving the award. “All the hard work and dedication put into the sport, it all gets paid back at times like this.”

    LELAND — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 25-23, 26-24, 25-20 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 14 at North.

    The second set was the key one of the match. The Trojans rallied from a deficits of 6-0, 20-9 and 23-14 on the way to the 26-24 victory.

    In the second set, Alleigh Himes served the Scorpions to a 6-0 lead. With the lead 13-9, Bailey Evans held serve for seven straight points, the final point an ace, and a 20-9 lead.

  • West Brunswick soccer team wins...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick scored four second-half goals in beating South Brunswick 4-2 and winning a soccer game for the first time this season.

    For West, sophomore forward Alex Younts scored twice. Junior forward David Reyes and junior defender Anthony Tapia also scored as West opened its conference season with the victory.

    West is 1-0 in the conference, 1-5-1 overall. South is 0-6 overall.

    West trailed 1-0 in the second half but tied the score on Reyes’ goal with about 26 minutes left.

  • MEC golf match at Carolina...

    Caroline Cahill shot a 33 and teammate Jayla Rogers shot a 36 in leading Class 4A Laney to a first-place finish Sept. 12 in a Mideastern 3A/4A conference golf match on the Heron Course at Carolina National.

    The course was 2,338 yards. This was the fourth match of the conference season.

    “The greens were in great shape,” said Laney assistant coach Kathy Murchison, “which yielded a couple of low scores today. It was too bad that we couldn't play all 18 holes.”

  • Adam Fulford wins Mini-Stocks...

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Adam Fulford won the Mini-Stock championship Saturday, Sept. 10, at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    Fulford finished third in the final points race of the season, one position ahead of brother Willie. Seven cars competed in the 20-lap race.

    Adam Fulford entered the final race a point ahead of his brother. Each Fulford finished the 10-race season with three victories.

    This is the fourth title for Adam Fulford.

    Willie Fulford has won three titles. Willie won the title in 2015 by six points over his brother.

  • McCray leads the way for West in...

     SHALLOTTE — Two stunning runs by Anthony McCray — 40 yards and 98 yards — helped lead West Brunswick to a 34-7 victory against Whiteville in a non-conference football game Sept. 9 at West.

    McCray finished with three touchdowns (the other was 5 yards) and unofficially gained 202 yards on 16 carries.

    Sophomore Damonte Daniels scored on a 22-yard run and senior Maliek King scored on a 6-yard run as the Trojans improved to 3-1. Whiteville, a Class 1A team, is 1-3.
