  • Fishermen welcome Kingfish Cup...

    March can be an extremely fickle month both with fishing and weather. Many of the local fishermen call this month and April transition months because of how much changes within the fishing world between the last cold front and that first day your car air-conditioner is on full blast. Typically, local fishermen spend their time maintaining and upgrading their boats yet eagerly wait for the next calm day to make the run to the Gulf Stream.

  • Breaking barriers to playing golf

    For many reasons, people are intimidated to take up the game of golf. I relate it to myself as if I were to take a dance class, which is completely out of my element. I know nothing about dance. Putting myself on showcase on a dance floor in front of other people is not something that would be comfortable for me to do.

    For this reason I understand why people are intimidated to play golf or take a lesson. We have to get out of our comfort zone sometimes and put ourselves out there to experience different things and bring more enjoyment to life.

  • Trojans rally, defeat North 5-4...

    LELAND — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 5-4 in seven innings in a non-conference softball game March 8 at North.

    West trailed 4-2 in the top of the fifth but scored three runs with two outs in taking a 5-4 lead.

    With one out, Haley Long doubled and McKenzie Benton walked. With two outs, Cierra Watts reached on an outfielder’s error and two runs scored. Pinch hitter Peyton Daniels walked. Mackenzie Williams singled, scoring a run, but Daniels was out at third, ending the inning.

  • Trojans beat Whiteville 4-1 in...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Whiteville 4-1 in a non-conference soccer game March 7 at West.

    Senior Amberlee Fogel scored three goals and senior Claire McNeil one. McNeil and sophomore Estephanie Cruz each had an assist.

    The victory came one day after the Trojans shut out North Brunswick 5-0.

    Fogel scored four goals and sophomore Jessica Barba one, coach Richard Dominguez said. McNeil had three assists and Cruz had an assist.

    Joi Sturdivant was West’s goalkeeper in both games.

  • Stenborg leads division in...

    The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team won its final regular season game, beating Clinton Community College 100-86 March 2.

    For BCC, Bobby Stenborg scored 24 points, Daivon Gamble 18, Jaylon Wray 17 and Devin Hutchinson 11.

    Stenborg, a sophomore, finished the regular season as the division leader in scoring, 20.3 points per game. He hit 60.1 percent of his shots, third highest in the division.

    BCC is 17-13 overall. It finished 3-9 and tied for fifth in Region 10.

  • Tyquan Hill to play in national...

    Davidson County Community College beat Montgomery (Md.) College 92-79 Saturday in Oxford, Ga., and won the NJCAA Division III District 7 title. The victory qualified the Storm for the national tournament March 16-18 at the UCR Regional Sports Centerin Rochester, Minn.

    Freshman Tyquan Hill, a West Brunswick graduate, played nearly 30 minutes in the title game. He led the Storm in assists (10). He tied for most steals (two) and blocked shots (one). He hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points.

  • BCC splits doubleheader with USC...

    BOLIVIA —  The Brunswick Community College baseball team split two games against the USC Sumter Fire Ants in a doubleheader Saturday at Founders Field.

    In the first game, the Dolphins made six errors in losing 8-7 in nine innings. BCC starter Derrick Carter gave up six runs, three of them unearned, in 3.2 innings. He walked none, gave up eight hits and struck out eight.

    BCC trailed 8-3 entering the bottom of the fifth but scored four runs.

  • Trojans lose baseball game to...

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick baseball team lost 5-0 to North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School in the Trojan Invitational on Friday at Mike Alderson Field.

    West (1-1) was held to three hits in the seven-inning game. West batters struck out 12 times. On defense, a passed ball indirectly led to a run and a dropped fly ball indirectly led to another run.

    St. James 10

    St. James (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) beat West Brunswick 10-1 in the Trojans’ second lacrosse game of the season March 2 at St. James.

    St. James scored the game’s first goal with 8.2 seconds left in the first quarter.

    The Sharks scored three goals in the final 2:04 of the half in taking a 6-0 lead.

    St. James’ Kyrese Vereen and West’s Brandon Wehrly, both seniors, were ejected for fighting as the first half ended.

  • Mideastern 3A/4A Conference...

    South Brunswick swimmers Tyler Bowersox and McKenzie White are Mideastern 3A/4A Conference Swimmers of the Year.

    Coaches in the seven-team conference made the selections.

    White, a junior, won two events in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference swim championships Jan. 27 in Wilmington.

    White won the 100-yard backstroke (1 minute, 2.82 seconds) almost 2 seconds ahead of 17 other swimmers.

    She won the butterfly (1:02.47) 1.36 seconds ahead of 10 other swimmers.

    Bowersox, a senior, also won two events in the MEC swim championships.
