  • Trojans top Topsail in five sets

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick volleyball team beat Topsail 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 31-33, 15-8 in a conference match between two Class 3A teams Sept. 8.

    West is 2-1 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference.

    After losing the fourth set, West dominated the fifth set. A kill by Myah Morse gave West a 3-1 lead and led to a four-point run with Payton Roberts serving. In the run, Hannah Pugh and Morse combined twice on blocks.

    An errant serve by Topsail and another error gave West two more points and a 9-2 lead.

    North Carolina Marine Patrol Officer Jonathan Weaver will receive the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award Sept. 17 during the full council meeting in Hilton Head, S.C.

    The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council award acknowledges service above and beyond duty requirements, recognizes distinctive service, professionalism and dedication to enforcing fisheries regulations in the South Atlantic region. 

  • The First Tee of Brunswick...

    In 2005, The First Tee of Brunswick County received its charter from the national office. It began with a handful of volunteers and a few dozen kids.

    On Sunday, Sept. 6, The First Tee of Brunswick County celebrated 10 years of golf and fun and teaching core values to the youth of Brunswick County. A reception took place at the Leadership Academy at Cinghiale Creek, the home course of The First Tee. Jennifer Weiler, vice president of The First Tee, traveled from Saint Augustine, Fla., to help celebrate.

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Willie Fulford won the Mini Stocks championship Sept. 3 at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    The Fulford family was the dominant name in the division this season as brothers Willie and Adam chased the season title. Willie Fulford, who had won four races, had a 13-point lead entering the final race over Adam Fulford, who had won three races.

    In the 20-lap race Sept. 3, Willie Fulford led the early laps but brother Adam took the lead about midway through the race on the way to the victory.

    The West Brunswick volleyball team began its conference season this week, beating Ashley but losing to Hoggard.

    West Brunswick defeated Ashley 25-23, 25-23, 27-25 Sept. 1 in Wilmington.

    Hannah Pugh had 11 kills, 18 digs and five service aces.

    Haley Long had 15 digs.

    Payton Roberts had 12 assists.

    The Ashley JV beat West 2-0.

    In a match Sept. 2 at West, Hoggard rallied to beat the Trojans 22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-5.

    Pugh led team in kills (18), digs (27) and service aces (three).
