  • Trojans score in seventh, beat...

     SHALLOTTE — Senior Charlie Carcich’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning gave West Brunswick a 5-4 victory against Hoggard in a conference baseball game Thursday, March 26.

    West improved to 3-2 in the conference, 9-2 overall. Hoggard is 3-2, 7-3.

    “Anytime you can win a conference game in this conference, you take it,” West coach T.J. Spivey said.

  • New Hanover beats West 5-3 in...

     Staff Report

    New Hanover scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to beat West Brunswick 5-3 in a conference baseball game Tuesday, March 24, at Legion Stadium.

    In the bottom of the sixth, New Hanover loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a one-out single. A sacrifice fly scored a run, giving New Hanover a 2-0 lead. Two singles and a double drove in three more runs for a 5-0 lead.

  • Trojan soccer player Chase Hill...

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick senior Chase Hill has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Methodist University.

    For Hill, the university is a right blend for his major (business management) and soccer.

    “It would be the best fit for me getting the best undergraduate education possible and having the best career in college soccer,” he said.

    Hill said the coaching staff showed interest in him early in his junior year, when he attended some camps.

  • Kerner throws one-hitter as BCC...

     

    BOLIVIA — Ben Kerner threw a five-inning one-hitter as Brunswick Community College beat New River Community College 11-1 in the first  game of a baseball doubleheader Saturday, March 21, at Founders Field.

    The only hit Kerner allowed was a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth. Kerner struck out three and walked no one.

  • McCumbee, McAleer third in...

     Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer finished third in the Visual Studio 150 Friday, March 20, at Sebring International Raceway. They drove a Mazda MX-5 in the Street Tuner class for C.J. Wilson Racing on the 3.74-mile course.

    Greg Liefooghe passed Andrew Carbonell for the Street Tuner (ST) lead with one hour remaining and led the rest of the way to give Next Level European its first victory in the No. 83 Red Line Oil Porsche Cayman started by Eric Zimmermann.

  • Topsail beats West Brunswick 11-...

     SHALLOTTE — Topsail finished with 15 hits and West Brunswick made five errors as the Pirates beat the Trojans 11-1 in a conference baseball game Friday, March 20, at Mike Alderson Field.

    The loss was the first of the season for West (2-1 in the conference, 8-1 overall).

    Topsail, which won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A baseball state title in 2014, is 3-1, 7-1.

  • Gore strikes out side with bases...

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 6-5 March 18 as West senior pitcher Caroline Gore struck out three straight batters after North had loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning.

    “Caroline had been struggling all year, getting back in shape and getting to the point where she had confidence in herself and believing in herself,” West coach Joe Noble said. “Tonight, she came in and she did a great job. I couldn’t have asked for her to pitch any better.”

     For the fourth-straight game, East Carolina scored double-digit runs cruising past Princeton 11-2 March 17 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

    The Pirates (14-6) extended their current win streak to five games (9 of last 10),while Princeton falls to 1-10 on the season.

  • Trojans beat Cougars 5-2 in...

    West Brunswick beat South Brunswick 5-2 in a conference baseball game  March 17 at South.

    Winning pitcher Brett Babson threw a no-hitter for 5.1 innings and gave up two runs (one earned). He walked six and struck out seven.

    Reliever Austin Turner finished, giving up one hit and one walk. He struck out one.

  • Laney defeats Trojans 9-0 in...

     SHALLOTTE — Laney defeated West Brunswick 9-0 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference girls’ soccer game March 17.

    The loss was the first of the season for the Class 3A Trojans (4-1-1). Laney, a Class 4A team, scored in the first 3 minutes and led 2-0 with 30 minutes left in the first half. It scored one more goal for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

    Laney scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half in taking a 5-0 lead. It scored four goals in the next 23 minutes in taking a 9-0 lead and ending the game with 10:35 left.
