  • Emile, Lady Trojans slam Davie...

     SHALLOTTE — Leilani Emile hit a grand slam as West Brunswick beat Davie County 15-6 in a second-round game Monday, April 6, of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational softball tournament.

    Emile hit the grand slam in the third inning, as West scored six runs and took a 7-3 lead. She finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.

    Emile, a senior first baseman, has hit a home run in four straight games. West coach Joe Noble said he was unable to recall any of his former players hitting home runs in four straight games.

    SHALLOTTE — Connor Durham, in his first start of the season, threw a five-inning no-hitter as West Brunswick beat Upper Room Christian School (Dix Hills, N.Y.) Monday, April 6, in a first-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational baseball tournament.

    Durham, a junior, walked two and struck out seven against URC, playing its first game of the season.

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat South Columbus 8-4 in a first-round game Monday of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational softball tournament.

    West, the visiting team, scored its first run when Haley Long led off with a single, was bunted to second by Caroline Gore and scored on an overthrow of third base on a one-out flyout by Ariana Thomas.

    Leilani Emile then hit a two-run home run as West took a 3-0 lead. The homer was Emile’s third in three games.

    SHALLOTTE — North Brunswick beat East Columbus 4-1 in a first-round game Monday of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational baseball tournament on Mike Alderson Field.

    Freshman Landen Wright gave up one hit and one run in six innings. He walked one and struck out eight

    The Scorpions are scheduled to play a second-round game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 7.

     High schools from all over the United States came to Brunswick County for the Palmetto High School Championships on April 2-4. They played their qualifying round at the Pearl Golf Links on Thursday, April 2, then moved to Ocean Ridge Plantation, where they played Lion’s Paw and Panther’”s Run in the championship finals.

     SHALLOTTE—A full moon was rising as West Brunswick’s softball team turned into attackers and ambushed South Brunswick 6-1 Thursday night, April 2. The Lady Trojans pounced on the Lady Cougars early, scoring two runs in the first inning and three runs in the third, when Leilani Emile hit a home run out of the park for the second game in a row. West had 10 hits compared with South’s two.

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat South Brunswick 3-2 in a conference baseball game Thursday, April 2, at Mike Alderson field.

    West trailed 2-1 in the seventh. Tyler McDuffie led off with a single. Austin Turner reached on an error. With one out, Charlie Carcich singled, driving in the tying run.

    After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Cameron Davis’ grounder scored the winning run.

    The victory completed a season sweep of the Cougars.

  • Trojans lose to Cougars in...

     SHALLOTTE — South Brunswick beat West Brunswick 10-8 Thursday, April 2, in the first girls’ lacrosse game between the two teams.

    Ana Poulin scored West’s only goal in the first half, which ended with South ahead 4-1. The Cougars led 6-1 with 19 minutes left when West rallied, cutting the lead to 6-5 in 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

    “I was so proud of the girls,” West coach Kate Gentle said. “They played a phenomenal second half. They came back to almost win the game.”
