  • Hunter Allen named to Brooks...

    East Carolina senior Hunter Allen has been named to the 2015 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, according to an announcement by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

    The award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock.

    Allen, who has helped the Pirates to a 26-16 overall record, is one of 49 collegiate shortstops around the country named to the midseason watch list.

  • West, South tie 3-3 in soccer

     SHALLOTTE  —  The West Brunswick and South Brunswick girls’ soccer teams played to a 3-3 tie Thursday, April 23, at West.

    West sophomore Claire McNeil forced overtime when she scored with 6.1 seconds left.

    She then scored 36 seconds into overtime in giving the Trojans a 3-2 lead. South tied the score about 6 minutes later on a long-range kick by Amanda Goelz.

    West is 1-5-1 in the conference, 8-5-2 overall. West beat South 3-1 April 2.

  • County foes play classic tennis...

     OCEAN ISLE BEACH — South Brunswick senior Caleb Hemphill beat West Brunswick junior Cameron Huffman 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in a semifinal of the Mideastern 3A Conference singles tennis championships Thursday, April 23, at the Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center and went on to win the final.

    In the championship match, Hemphill beat Topsail’s Jason Loher 6-2, 6-2. But it was the semifinal between Hemphill and Huffman that many considered one of the best tennis matches they had seen.

    SHALLOTTE — Kelly Williamson has been hired to be the next football coach at West Brunswick High School.

    West athletics director Jimmy Fletcher announced the hiring Thursday morning.

    “I live here, been here for seven years, and I’ve known Jimmy since then,” Williamson said April 23. “It’s a great opportunity I feel like to be (coaching) closer to home.”

    Williamson had been the head football coach at Latta (S.C.) High School the past four seasons.

  • Trojans defeat North Myrtle Beach

     

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 13-2  in four and one-half innings in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday, April 22, on Mike Alderson Field.

    The Trojans (16-4) took advantage of NMB mistakes in winning the game with five hits and nine walks. The Trojans stole six bases. NMB is 8-12.

     West scored four runs in the second on one hit one error, two passed balls and four stolen bases. The Trojans scored seven runs in the third and two in the fourth.

  • Scorpions’ Klutz signs with Lees...

     LELAND — North Brunswick senior softball player Kasey Klutz signed a letter of intent Wednesday, April 22, to attend Lees-McRae College.

    The scholarship is worth $8,000 Klutz’s first year, renewable through her senior season.

    “She’s a great kid,” North softball coach Brittney Lehrschall said. “She works extremely hard. One of our leaders. She’s competitive. She’s a huge difference on the field.”
