  • A heartfelt “thank you” to three...

I started this job in the middle of May and almost immediately my bosses, managing editor Jackie Torok and general manager Angie Sutton, began telling me about the annual Tournament of Champions.

    Here’s the Reader’s Digest version.

  • Brunswick Community College...

The men’s basketball team at Brunswick Community College got off to a blistering start in the opening weeks of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) play.

Brunswick sports a 4-1 record after splitting a pair of contests in the Louisburg College Classic on Nov. 10-11 at Louisburg College.

  • Before it gets too cold,...

The fishing off the Brunswick County Coast has been flat out incredible this fall. From Spanish mackerel, big king mackerel and sharks nearshore to grouper and wahoo offshore, the fishing has not been good, it’s been great.

  • Brunswick Football League bowl...

  • Monty Stanley named Farm Bureau...
  • West Brunswick drops thriller...

After Laney reeled off 26 consecutive points to take a 12-point lead, it appeared as if the West Brunswick varsity football team had no hope for a comeback.

The Trojans hadn’t scored a touchdown since the midway point of the first quarter and found themselves with a two-touchdown deficit with just six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

That’s when things got awfully interesting.

Senior quarterback Owen McDowell rifled a touchdown pass to wide receiver Noah Johnson to pull the Trojans within a score, 26-21.

  • Future Atlanta Brave-to-be the...

I’m sure everyone who saw my son dressed up in an Atlanta Braves uniform last week at Shallotte First Baptist’s fall festival event just assumed that was my doing.

I want all of you to know Huck going to the event dressed as a ball player wasn’t my idea. It was my wife’s, so there.

At this time last year, we were still carrying Huck around in our arms or pushing him around in a stroller, so this year’s event was a little different, to say the least.

  • Tournament of Champions set to...

The Tournament of Champions began in 2003 when Elsa Bonstein, a former golf columnist for The Brunswick Beacon, wrote an article about Brunswick County club champions. Several champions suggested that there should be a countywide championship in which the local champions played against each other each year in a scratch event. Ben Carlson, then-editor of the Beacon, thought it was a good idea and the Beacon has since sponsored the event.

  • Elementary school students...

More than 100 fourth graders competed at last week’s 7th annual Champions Challenge event took place at The First Tee of Brunswick County's Golf Park at Cinghiale Creek.

  • Cougars top Buccaneers in Oyster...

WINNABOW – The Southport Cougars raced out to a 27-6 lead in the Oyster Bowl on Saturday at Town Creek Park and seemed to have an answer for everything the Shallotte Buccaneers threw at them.

Despite the deficit, the Bucs wouldn’t go away in the championship game in the senior division of the Brunswick Football League.

The Bucs rode the speed of Jordan McCall and Jeffery Cobb to a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and trimmed the deficit to 33-20 at intermission.
