  • Strawberry pop and a smile help ease rough workdays

    It’s a common superstition — and one I buy into, based on personal experience — that lunar phases affect people’s behavior, with full moons bringing the wackiness out of some folks. The next full moon, a Strawberry Moon, isn’t scheduled until Thursday, June 28, but one astrological calendar I found online tells me last Thursday and Friday had “void moons,” or times to avoid starting anything important because projects do not tend to be as productive.

  • Band of the Week: Steve Owens & Summertime play Sunset Beach on June 27

    Award-winning Steve Owens & Summertime hits the stage of the next Sunset Beach Summer Concert from 7 to 9 p.m. next Wednesday, June 27, in the Village at Sunset Beach.

    The Roanoke Rapids-based band walked away with the “Favorite New Artist of the Year” award at the 2012 Carolina Beach Music Awards in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

    The multi-musician beach group was also nominated for 2014 Cammy Awards.

    Lead vocalist and band namesake Steve Owens was nominated for Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year.

    Larceny of a truck and trailer worth $6,000 from Beach House Harley-Davidson on Harley-Davidson Drive.

    Vandalism, destruction of property totaling $4,000 and theft of $500 from coin-operated drink machines in the parking lot of GoGas on Main Street.

  • Belville claims H2GO asset transfer legal

    Belville’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Leland and Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO, which challenges Belville’s ownership of H2GO’s assets.

    The June 4 motion to dismiss filing included a notice of a hearing; the lawyers asked for a hearing in Brunswick County Superior Court at 9:30 a.m. July 16 or as soon as the case can be heard by the court.
