WINNABOW—A Winnabow man was killed Thursday evening when his bike was struck by several vehicles on U.S. 17.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. C.K. Parks said 40-year-old Harley Becraft of Winnabow was riding his bike southbound on U.S. 17 near Winnabow Thursday evening.

Parks said Becraft was riding his bike, which was not illuminated, on the roadway in the southbound lane.

Just before 7 p.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 17 struck Becraft.

“After the initial vehicle struck him, two more vehicles struck [Becraft],” Parks said.

Becraft was pronounced dead on the scene, Parks said.

“There was no indication of speed being a factor of any of the vehicles involved,” Parks said, adding no charges have been filed.

“It was dark. He was in the actual roadway. His bicycle wasn’t illuminated with any lights or anything. Right now the contributing circumstances would be the guy on the bicycle in the roadway,” Parks said.

At this point, troopers didn’t know if Becraft was possibly impaired on drugs or alcohol, but said a toxicology report would be completed in 60 to 90 days.
