Body found in Sunset Beach

Investigators believe a body found in Sunset Beach on Friday morning might be that of a 23-year-old man reported missing earlier this month.

Sunset Beach police were notified just before 10 a.m. Jan. 25 a body had been found floating face down in a golf course pond within town limits. The body was removed from the water with assistance of the Sunset Beach Fire Department, the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina Medical Examiner's office.

Investigators have reason to believe the body that was recovered is that of Paul Milton Simms who went missing near this same area on Jan. 9. The body is being sent for autopsy and positive identification by order of the state medical examiner.

Investigators did not observe any evidence of foul play at the scene, according to a press release issued Friday afternoon by the Sunset Beach Police Department. An investigation is ongoing.

The N.C. Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert on Jan. 10 for Simms after he was last seen at Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach.

Simms was believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment. He was described as a 6-foot-1 white man weighing 185 pounds with blue eyes and long brown hair. He was last seen wearing a camouflage coat and could reportedly have been headed to Oak Island, Hiddenite or Myrtle Beach, S.C.
