Brunswick teams advance in Dixie Boys Baseball state tournaments

 The Dixie Boys (14-year-olds) and Junior Dixie Boys (13-year-olds) state baseball tournaments began Saturday at Smithville Park. Below are summaries of the Brunswick Junior Dixie Boys’ game Saturday and of the Brunswick Dixie Boys’ game Sunday. The junior tourney ends July 20 and the senior tourney ends July 21. Winners advance to the World Series. For the 13s, it is July 30-Aug. 3 in Seneca, S.C. For the 14s, it is July 30-Aug. 3 in Beaufort, S.C.






Brunswick opened the Junior Dixie Boys Baseball State Tournament tourney by beating Duplin County 9-5 on Saturday. Catcher Jordan Flora hit a two-run home run and threw out two runners. Jacob Watson hit a triple. Brett Babson and Jake Elliott hit doubles in the victory.

Starter Connor Durham gave up four hits and three unearned runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out five.

Cameron Lewis pitched the final three innings, giving up five hits and two runs. He walked one, hit one and struck out three.

Brunswick made two errors in the top of the third as Duplin scored three runs.

Brunswick scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a single by D.J. Perkins. He drove in Forrest Kelly and Elliott, who had led off the inning with singles.

Brunswick took the lead for good in the fourth with two runs. Watson led off with a triple to left field and scored on Babson’s groundout. With two outs, Elliott doubled to center. Tristan Lewis and Perkins walked, loading the bases. Durham reached on an infield error and a run scored, putting Brunswick ahead 4-3.

Brunswick scored three runs in the fifth. Elijah Daniels walked, stole second, stole third and scored on the overthrow. Babson doubled and went to third on a balk. After Tyler Stanley walked, Elliott was safe on an infield error and a Daniels scored. Lewis grounded out and a run scored, giving Brunswick a 7-3 lead.

In the sixth, Durham led off with a single and Flora hit a home run that cleared the left field fence 300 feet from home plate.

Duplin scored twice in the seventh and had runners on third and second with two outs, but Lewis ended the game with a strikeout.



Brunswick scored six runs in the second inning and went on to beat East Gaston 9-4 in a second-round game Sunday of the Dixie Boys Baseball State Tournament.

Shelton Perkins was the winning pitcher. In four innings, he gave up one run, a home run, and five hits. He walked one, hit one and struck out seven.

Chris Graham hit a leadoff home run in the second and finished 4-for-4 with a double.

Dylan Darguzas was 3-for-3 with a walk, a triple and three RBIs.

Brunswick trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the second, but after Graham’s home run, Darguzas walked and Justin Wittkofsky singled. Shakeem Graham reached on an error and a run scored on an overthrow of the catcher. Randy Mac Clark walked, loading the bases. Gray Cheers walked, forcing in the tying run.

Kevon Perkins, who hit a home run in the first game on Saturday against Columbus County, hit a double that scored two runs. After Shelton Perkins walked, Blaine Hollis hit a sacrifice fly.

Darguzas doubled home two runs in the fourth. East Gaston scored in the sixth, but Brunswick scored in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff double by Chris Graham and a triple by Darguzas.

Cheers pitched the final one and one-third innings.
