County needs more rehab options

Southern Brunswick County is in desperate need of a rehabilitation hospital. Three years ago, I had a complete knee replacement at Brunswick Community Hospital, and since I lived alone, I was sent to Coastal Rehab Hospital in Wilmington.

Recently, I had my right knee done, and Social Services would not send me to Coastal. I had to spend 10 days at Autumn Care Nursing Home and Rehab.

After my experiences, I think it is time for Brunswick County to have its own rehabilitation facility. I believe once the new hospital is built, the current Brunswick Community Hospital would be best utilized as a self-contained rehab center for the many citizens of this area, one that is truly devoted to the rehabilitation of citizens in need of this service.

In the meantime, decent accommodations must be supplied to those in need. This area of southern Brunswick County is heavily populated with retirees and senior citizens who have particular needs due to knee and hip replacements, stroke victims and recovering heart patients.

An additional factor to be considered is those who have a choice are taking their insurance dollars across the border to South Carolina. I was not given a choice.
