A pair of Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputies accused of excessive force in a 2007 shooting were cleared in a civil rights lawsuit in federal district court Thursday, March 20, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The jury determined George Cooper, a Leland man who was shot by two deputies in May 2007 at his Maco Road home, had fired a shotgun at the officers. U.S. District Court Judge James Dever dismissed the case, saying the deputies were entitled to the use of excessive force and not liable for their actions.
