BOLIVIA—A detention officer at the Brunswick County Detention Center was arrested for drug possession Wednesday and fired immediately following his arrest.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Del Routh said Bryan Marshburn, 56, of 55 Burton Road, Southport, was arrested and charged by agents with the sheriff’s office vice narcotics unit Wednesday, March 28.

Marshburn was charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the detention center, where he was placed under a $5,000 secured bond.

Marshburn was hired at the detention center June 20, 2011, as a part-time detention officer, where he earned a salary of $10 an hour. He had not received any pay increases, promotions or demotions during the time he worked at the detention center, according to Routh.

In his termination letter, Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram wrote, “Effectively immediately your service with Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is no longer needed. Turn in all departmental identification and equipment immediately.”

Marshburn is scheduled to make a court appearance at 9:30 a.m. March 29.
