Food for Thought:Sugar Shack sweet on spread

The Sugar Shack at 1609 Hale Beach Road in Ocean Isle Beach regularly draws crowds for its authentic Jamaican fare including jerk chicken and pork, cod fritters and curried goat. But trying to accommodate all that popularity in compact quarters has been a challenge.

That’s why Sugar Shack owners Dave and Linda Bryce recently expanded the front of the 17-year-old eatery and tweaked it with a few renovations.

The front entry now features a covered porch so customers can sit in better comfort and even enjoy a drink from the Sugar Shack Tiki Bar if they wish while they wait for a table. It’s a place where “people can wait without sweating,” Linda said.

Linda is also proud of the eatery’s new Bend Down Boutique, its name inspired by the Jamaican Bend Down Market where people “bend down” to select and gather produce. The boutique sells colorful Sugar Shack T-shirts and other Jamaican-themed gifts and souvenirs.

Now that it’s summertime, Sugar Shack has summertime hours and is open for dinner seven days week starting at 5 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Call 579-3844.
