Get ready for free, professional health screenings, chair massages and information.

All of this and more will be showcased at Health Expo 2012, slated for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. next Saturday, Feb. 25, at West Brunswick High School.

Sponsored by The Brunswick Beacon, the sixth annual expo will feature about 40 vendors and sponsors converging in the school gymnasium and elsewhere at the school on N.C. 130, according to Christy Williamson, expo representative for the Beacon.

Free screenings this year will include cholesterol checks and screenings for blood pressure, computerized spinal and nervous system, dermatology, vision and digital intra-oral with computerized read-outs.

A new addition this year is dental screening, according to Williamson.

As it has in the past, the expo will also feature a medication disposal drop-off, where residents may dispose of out-of-date or unwanted medications, including controlled substances, prescriptions, over-the-counter medicine, liquids, inhalers, vitamins and needles.

A new highlight this year is Safe Sitters, now an authorized program at the high school, Williamson said. The baby-sitting training program will begin at 9 a.m. for participants ages 11-13. It is being led by Sheila King, who teaches Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at the high school.

The cost of the Safe Sitters program is $35, and pre-registration for an available 20 spots is required. For more information, call Sheila King at 754-4338, ext. 1373.

There will be lots of door prizes, Williamson said. Car-seat safety checks will also be available.

All of the vendors at the expo are local—from Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Horry, S.C., counties.

Four area hospitals are sponsoring and participating in this year’s expo, including Brunswick Novant Medical Center, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Columbus Regional Healthcare System based in Whiteville and McLeod Loris Seacoast in Horry County.

Other participating sponsors include Vision Square Eyecare, Family First Chiropractic, Summit Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, Myrtle Beach Plastic Surgery, Riverview Dental Associates, Woodmen of the World, CommWell Health, Varnam Family Wellness Center, Allergy Partners, Brunswick Physical Therapy Associates, Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle, A-2-Z Home Medical and Sunset Slush.

Representatives from the March of Dimes and American Cancer Society will participate.

Admission is free, and free childcare will be available.

Food will be for sale from HOSA.
