Leland adds leeway for accessory buildings

By Brian Slattery

The Leland town board did a little yard clearing — on its ordinances — to allow more uses of accessory buildings.

“The accessory structure ordinance was unwieldy,” town planning director Robert Waring said.

The changes to the ordinance make it clear the accessory structures, like apartments, sheds or pods, require a permit from the town.

But added features to the yard like fences, walls or pergolas do not require a permit.

Accessory apartments will be allowed in R-20, R-15, R-6, and Planned Unit Developments.
