A 68-year-old Leland man has been arrested for raping a woman at an assisted living facility.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Del Routh said detectives arrested Merlin Alford, 68, of 1935 Lincoln Road, Leland, on Sunday, April 8.

Alford has been charged with second-degree rape.

He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $100,000 secured bond.

According to Alford’s arrest warrant, the sexual assault, which was “by force and against the victim’s will,” occurred on April 8.

The assault took place at the Leland House assisted living facility, which is at 1935 Lincoln Road, Leland, Routh said.

Alford’s address on the arrest report is the same as the Leland House, but sheriff’s office Capt. Mose Highsmith did not confirm if Alford was a resident there.

Multiple attempts to determine if the victim was a resident at the assisted living facility were also repeatedly denied.

The Brunswick Beacon does not identify victims of sexual assault.
