Silas Love, a freshman forward for Brunswick Community College’s men’s basketball team, was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 12-18.

Love poured in a career-best 43 points and snared 11 rebounds in a 108-86 victory over West Oaks Academy Prep on Nov. 16 in the opening round of the Cape Fear Classic, which was played on the campus of Brunswick Community College.

Love also chipped in five assists during his record-setting effort.

The Dolphins improved to 6-1 before a brief break during the Thanksgiving holiday with a 77-73 victory over Lenoir Community College on Nov. 20.

Love scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory, while Tyrece Cheek added 13 points.

Brandon Lamberth scored 12 points and secured eight rebounds and Mike Melvin produced a solid all-around effort with 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists in BCC’s four-point win.

BCC suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 campaign with an 82-70 setback against Georgia Highlands Prep (Ga.) during the second round of the Cape Fear Classic on Nov. 17.

The Dolphins fell behind by 22 points in the first half and never recovered, dropping their first tilt of the season.

Melvin had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the loss, while Love scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Newkirk had eight points, seven assists and three rebounds against Georgia Highlands Prep. Cheek finished the contest with nine points.

Even with a 2-1 record and improving to 6-1 before Thanksgiving, Love has stolen the show in the last two weeks for the Dolphins.

BCC overcame a late deficit against Francis Marion’s junior varsity team thanks to Love’s 14 points in the final eight minutes.

A few days later Love established a career high with 43 points (18-of-24 from the field) and NJCAA player of the week honors for his effort against West Oaks Academy Prep.

The Dolphins were scheduled to play Johnston Community College on Monday, Nov. 26, before traveling to Francis Marion for a rematch with the Patriots’ JV team on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Brunswick’s women’s basketball team remained undefeated Nov. 20 with a 77-56 victory over Lenoir Community College.

The Lady Dolphins are scheduled to resume the 2018-19 campaign with a road game at Mt. Olive on Thursday, Nov. 29.
