ONDBEAT Halloween candy map sweetens election season this year

In the midst all the breaking news and upcoming Nov. 6 elections (who ya gonna vote for?), it’s time to take a commercial Kit Kat break and address another important seasonal topic: Halloween candy.

Every year about this time, my email transom starts pouring in with public relations messages from Los Angeles-based CandyStore.com.

After years ignoring and clicking them away into my trash and junk mail folders, I finally decided these guys deserve a smidgen of attention. They must know something about sweet treats, after all, sending their survey all the way from California and everything.

Their topic always focuses on the latest national candy map and which kinds of candy are most popular in each of the 50 states.

In Alaska, for example, Twix is tops for warming the festive night while Arizona and Florida tummies in 2018 most often prefer to melt sweet snacky Snickers.

“How many Snickers bars would it take to fill the Grand Canyon?” CandyStore.com cleverly asks.

Californians chose 1.6 million pounds of fruity Skittles as their top candy this year. I believe this speaks for itself.

Candy corn reigns in corn capital Iowa while Swedish Fish have somehow hooked folks in Georgia and Kentucky.

And now, to unwrap what readers in Beaconland have all been waiting for here on the cusp of Halloween: The most popular trick-or-treat candy in North Carolina this year is M&M’s, followed by Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers, all sweetly sensible choices in my mind and Halloween bag as long as it’s peanut rather than plain M&M’s they’re talking about. The map doesn’t specify but I do.

Top sweet tooth filling-inducers in neighboring South Carolina in order of preference are Skittles, candy corn and Hot Tamales. (Chocolate-loving Carolinians best stay north of the border to trick-or-treat this year.)

Other CandyStore.com findings:

• Among people celebrating Halloween nationwide, 95 percent will buy candy (duh), spending an average of $27.

• More than 50 percent of parents stash (or “borrow” from their kids’ treat bags) some Halloween candy to enjoy “later in the year” (aka for themselves, no kids involved, probably by Nov. 1 — duh again).

While candy corn finished tops and first place in seven states, it also merited second place in CandyStore.com’s worst Halloween candy survey, along with No. 1 Circus Peanuts, followed by wax cola bottles, Necco Wafers, peanut butter kisses, Tootsie Rolls, Smarties, licorice, Good & Plenty and Mary Janes. I don’t disagree with about 80 percent of these.

Why does all this matter?

Well, like I said earlier, it’s election time and voters everywhere have chosen.
