ASH—Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shotgun death, which they have preliminary determined was “accidental.”

According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Del Routh, deputies responded to a home at 1228 Ash-Little River Road around 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 16.

When deputies arrived, they found Wendall Padgett, 49, who suffered a shotgun wound to his left side. Padgett was taken to Sea Coast Hospital in Little River, S.C., where he was pronounced dead.

Routh would not confirm if it was Padgett or someone else who fired the weapon.

“The Brunswick County Detective Unit is conducting an investigation. It appears no foul play was involved. When more information becomes available, it will be released,” Routh said.

Repeated requests for more information were denied multiple times, with Routh saying more information would be released when an autopsy was completed.
