Just as a new law took effect Dec. 1 banning video sweepstakes games in North Carolina, operators of the establishments are already finding their way around it on the cusp of the New Year. Though some Brunswick County establishments shut down as required by the new law at midnight Dec. 1, within days they were open again. Hours after the law took effect, Dan Barone, an employee at Cyber Lynk Business Center in Calabash, was busy decorating a Christmas tree at the door of the empty business in anticipation of customers within days.
