SUNSET BEACH—Local police working with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are seeking a suspect in connection with the theft of a safe and checks.

Sunset Beach Deputy Chief Steve Smith said a safe containing starter checks was reported stolen Aug. 10 from a residence on Whiteville Road in Ash.

A white male suspect passed one of the checks for $300 that same day at BB&T in Sunset Beach. On Aug. 11, a suspect tried to pass a second check made out for $800 at the same bank.

After the cashier questioned the suspect, he said he was going to open an account and needed to do paperwork. The suspect then went outside and left the bank premises.

The investigation was coordinated through the South End Task Force with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, which investigated the theft in Ash. Sunset Beach police investigated the bank incidents.

Smith said they know who the suspect is.

“We’ve just got to put our hands on him,” he said.
