Taste the grape at wine society event

The Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society will focus on port wines at its next tasting event at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Silver Coast Winery.

This tasting will feature six port-style wines. Port wine, also known as Vinho do Porto, is a Portuguese-fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is typically a sweet, red wine, often served as a dessert wine and frequently accompanied with a fine cigar.

The meeting will have a strict limit of 40 attendees. The cost of the tasting will be $15 for AWS members. The guest-tasting fee is $20, $5 of which will be refunded if the guest joins the American Wine Society. All guests are urged to bring their favorite wine glass for this event. Prior to the tasting, the chapter will hold a brief meet-and-greet social with wine and cheese.

Now in its third year, members and guests of the Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society have tasted more than 200 different wines from five different states and 11 countries. This tasting event will be the first to present fortified wines.

Everyone is welcome to attend chapter meetings at Silver Coast Winery.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP as soon as possible via email to OceanIsleAWS@gmail.com.
