It’s Soup-er Bowl Saturday time.

This Saturday, the South Brunswick Islands Woman’s Club is kicking off its third fundraising Soup-er Bowl, an Empty Bowls Project to benefit the South Brunswick Interchurch Council food pantry.

For the price of a $15 ticket, each patron will be treated to a single serving of delicious soup prepared by one of the local participating restaurants or chefs at the event planned from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Shallotte Presbyterian Church.

In addition, each ticket-holder will receive a hand-crafted bowl donated by a local potter.

Area potters, including ones at Stay Centered Pottery Studio and Jeffcoat Pottery in the Carolina’s Business Park near Carolina Shores, are expected to contribute about 300 colorful, glazed bowls for the event.

Potter Joe Jeffcoat is among those who have been busy crafting and firing food-safe, no-two-are-the-same ceramic bowls in time for Saturday’s Soup-er Bowl.

Marie Marshburn, president of the South Brunswick Islands Woman’s Club, said each ticket would have a number corresponding with one of the available bowls at Saturday’s fundraiser. Participants can then exchange among themselves for a different bowl if they wish.

Those attending the fundraiser will not eat soup out of their beautiful new food-safe bowls Saturday, Marshburn said. Instead, disposable bowls will be used to serve the soups of their choice.

About eight restaurants and chefs will be participating in Saturday’s fundraiser. They include Chili’s, Angelo’s, Subway, the Grapevine Restaurant, Calabash Deli and Purple Onion. Olive Garden in Wilmington, the event’s biggest contributor, has also agreed to send 10 gallons of soup for the fundraiser.

The ticket price includes bread or crackers, a beverage and dessert.

Tickets for this Saturday’s Soup-er Bowl are still available.
