Tornado reported from Hurricane Dorian

As Hurricane Dorian passes along the Carolinas coast, a tornado has been reported over Sunset Beach Town Hall and surrounding neighborhoods about 7 a.m. Thursday.


Damage is reported on Shoreline Drive East, which is closed in the 300, 600 and 700 blocks. Power is out in that area but Brunswick Electric Membership Corp. is on-site and working to restore power, according to a release from the town. Town staff is surveying the rest of the town to see if other areas were affected.

Damages have also been reported in The Farm at Brunswick neighborhood and Car City on U.S. 17 in the Carolina Shores area, according to spokeswoman Honey Shore with the Calabash Fire Department.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Dorian is approaching from the south and will move close to the upper South Carolina coast Thursday afternoon and evening and track very close to the southeast North Carolina coast Thursday night.

The hurricane is forecast to begin accelerating away from the Cape Fear area late Thursday night into early Friday morning.
