A one-vehicle wreck on Friday afternoon claimed the life of an Ash man and injured his passenger.

Melvin Ray Hines, 58, of Ash, was killed on U.S. 17 near Red Bug Road around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.

According to Trooper Ransom with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Hines was driving a motorcycle with a passenger in the north-bound lane.

“Traffic was flowing when he hit his brakes to stop in time,” Ransom said. “He ran off the road to the right and the motorcycle overturned. He and his passenger were ejected.”

Melvin was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to the hospital.

“Both were wearing DOT approved helmets,” Ransom said.

While the wreck was being investigated, U.S. 17 was restricted to one lane of traffic.

“It was backed up but still moving,” Ransom said.

North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating another serious wrecks that occurred on Friday, Oct. 5 in Brunswick County. A second wreck on N.C. 87 caused serious personal injury.
