A Wilmington woman died Sunday, Feb. 16, after a head-on collision on N.C. 211 in St. James.

Sonia Vowls, 39, was thrown from her 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:30 p.m. crash, N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper K.E. Herring said.

Vowls and another motorcyclist were headed east on the highway when a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Kevin Zell, 28, crossed the center line and hit Vowls. Herring said Zell told him he was “messing with the radio” at the time of the crash.

Zell was taken to Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center with serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

He is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, Herring said.
