  • Harden-Clemmons engagement

    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Lisa Harden and Orrey Clemmons, both of Supply. The bride-elect is the daughter of Louie Hardin of Chadbourn and Judy Hardin of Supply. The prospective groom is the son of Demetri Clemmons of Supply and the late Chuck Clemmons. An April 18 wedding date is planned with the location to be decided.

  • Sallie Kapps celebrates 99th birthday

    The administration and staff of McLeod Loris Hospital host a hospital-wide birthday party for Sallie Kapps’ 99th birthday. A volunteer in the hospital gift shop for 34 years, Kapps started volunteering at the hospital soon after her retirement in 1984. Before then, she was a librarian with the Horry County, S.C., school system.

    “Good friends are the secret to a long life well lived,” Kapps said in a news release. “I’m fortunate to be able to still volunteer and help our visitors at the hospital.”

    Pastor Stephen Nobles and the Sunshine Sisters of New Britton Baptist Church in Ash celebrate the 80th birthday of Alta Mae Inman, who was born Feb. 27, 1938.

  • First baby of 2018

    Mikael Ray Lyman, son of Seth and Latoya Ray Lyman of Southport, is the first baby born in 2018 at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Supply. He was born Jan. 3 and 12:18 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 20-1/2 inches in length. He joins his 17-month-old brother, Major Noel Lyman.

  • Stitt promoted to brigadier general

    Douglas F. Stitt has been selected for promotion to the rank of brigadier general in the Army. He is serving as director of the Officer Personnel Management Directorate with Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Ky. He has served in the military for 27 years.

    Stitt is the son of Janet A. and Wesley L. Stitt of Canton, N.Y., and Barbara J. Bartholomew of Sunset Beach; husband of Beth J. Bartholomew-Stitt of Fort Knox, Ky.; father of Laura J. Stitt of Boone and Anna J. Stitt of Fort Knox, Ky.; and son-in-law of Donald R. Bartholomew of Sunset Beach.

  • Varnum-Andrews engagement

    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Makayla Varnum of Supply and Wade Andrews.

    The bride-elect is the daughter of Mark and Monica Varnum of Supply.

    The prospective groom is the son of John and Misty Andrews of Little River, S.C., and Deeann Elliott and John Danicki of Chillicothe, Ohio

    An Aug. 4 wedding is planned at Lockwood Folly Country Club.

  • Spence arrives for duty

    Army Sgt. 1st Class Tamika S. Spence has arrived for duty with the Army’s Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion’s Fairview Heights Recruiting Company as the new center leader for the Mount Vernon (Ill.) Recruiting Center.

    A native of Wilmington, Spence is a 1996 graduate of North Brunswick High School in Leland. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health services administration in 2015 from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

  • Powers graduates from basic

    Air Force Airman Kevin M. Powers, son of Mark and Jill Powers of Calabash and brother of Kyle Powers, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

    Powers completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

    Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
