• USS Mount McKinley reunion

     The USS Mount McKinley Association will have its 26th annual reunion in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sept. 17-21 for veterans and associate members from all branches of the military that served on the Amphibious Force Flagship, USS Mount McKinley AGC/LCC-7 and associate members from the Flagship Alliance group that served on one of the other AGCs during their years of commissioned service.

  • Gore family reunion

     The 20th annual family reunion for the friends and descendants of Coval and Dorcas Ann Gore of Gore Lake Road in Nakina will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Old Zion Wesleyan Methodist Church Family Center, 10144 Swamp Fox Highway in East Tabor City.

    The event will include a covered dish dinner along with a continued history program to educate and entertain, beach house rental and charter boat ticket door prizes, a slide show of past reunions and past generations, as well as more recent reunions and family member pictures.

  • Shoe, Wood marry

     Jodi Ellen Shoe of Sunset Beach and Sandy LaRue Wood of Calabash were married April 26 at Morgan Ridge Vineyard. Pastor Dan Gobble officiated the ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of David and Cathy Shoe of Salisbury. She was given in marriage by her father.

    The groom is the son of Betty Wood of Kennett, Mo., and the late Alton Wood.

    Matron of honor was Katie Shoe Flynn of Lewis Center, Ohio, sister of the bride.

    Ed Blanchard of Kennett, Mo., brother-in-law of the groom, served as best man.

  • Frink and Nye wed

     Ashlie Lauren Frink of Ocean Isle Beach and Benjamin Earl Nye III of Evergreen were married April 12 at Leamon Rogers Memorial Chapel in Lake Waccamaw.

    Pastor Willard McPherson officiated.

    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Frink and Ashlie Babson of Ocean Isle Beach. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin E. Nye Jr. of Lake Waccamaw.

    The bride was given in marriage and escorted by her father.

  • Hamilton Birth

     Wes and Hannah Hamilton of Holden Beach are the proud parents of a daughter, Isabella Kate Hamilton, born at 10 p.m. March 10 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, weighing 8 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 20 inches in length.

    Maternal grandparents are Joseph and Ramona Bowen of Angier.

    Paternal grandparents are C.W. and Carol Hamilton of Bolivia.

    Great-grandparents are Ida Ruth Bowen of Dunn and Nichlious and Betty Corn of Burnsville.

  • Valentine and Powers marry

     Marissa Renee Valentine of Ocean Isle Beach and Timothy Wayne Powers of Ash were married April 4 during a private ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Eric and Jody Valentine of Supply.

    The groom is the son of Edwin Wayne Powers of Evergreen and Rebecca Benton of Ash.

    A reception is planned for June.

  • Kennedy and Browning wedding

     Lisa Marie Kennedy and Albert Dean Browning, both of Shallotte, were married April 4 at their home in Shallotte. William Marlowe officiated the wedding.

    The bride is the daughter of Sharon Honaker of Ramseur and the late Kenneth Kennedy.

    The groom is the son of the late Dan and Ruby Nicholas Browning of Delbarton, W.Va.

    She wore a simple white spring dress with shoulder wrap and white shoes.

    Ringbearer was Abby Ballou.

    Best man was Waylon Saunders.

    A reception followed at the couple’s home.

  • Galloway celebrates her 101st birthday

     Arlene Grissett Galloway celebrated a birthday at Jerome’s Steak House in Shallotte with family and friends on Saturday, April 12. Born in the spring of 1913 to the union of Levi O. and Rosa Bryant Grissett, she was blessed to be 101 years old on Sunday, April 13. She received many phone calls and greeted family and friends dropping by with gifts and good wishes.

  • Gutjahr celebrates 102nd birthday

      Josephine Gutjahr celebrates her 102nd birthday at Carillon Assisted Living. Born March 22, 1912, in New Hampshire, she is the fourth of eight children, but the first child born in America to Italian parents. She moved to North Carolina from New Jersey in 2003 with her daughter and son-in-law, Roseann and Joe Kronski, and has been at Carillon since 2009. She still loves to sing hymns and Italian songs.



  • Vann and Babson announce marriage

      Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Joanna Elizabeth Vann of Greenville and Bradley Nelson Babson of Lake Waccamaw. The bride-elect is the daughter of Pat Drew and Jamie R. Vann, both of Clinton. The prospective groom is the son of Freda and Ken Kerr of Lake Waccamaw and Samuel Babson of Ash. An Aug. 23 wedding is planned at The Brooklyn Arts Center at St. Andrews in Wilmington.
